Can a modern reader discern Sophocles’s own position on the debatebetween civic responsibility (Creon’s edict) and family duty (Antigone’s defiance)? Are his authorial sympathies anywhere evident in the play?
What will be an ideal response?
- The pious Sophocles clearly favors Antigone and sees divine law taking precedence over human law. Haemon’s reasonable arguments in defense of her and against his father’s intransigence further show where the playwright’s sympathies lie, as do the statements of Teresias. But Creon’s principles (most fully articulated in lines 211–29 and 310–45) are given fair hearing.
