Emma ‘s parents both have high-powered jobs, so Emma must get up by 6:30 to give her mother time to drive her to preschool and then go to work. Emma eats breakfast and is ready to leave by 7:30 AM. Her mother drives her to the preschool, which opens at 8:00. Emma stays in school for four hours. Her nanny picks her up, drives her home, and gives her lunch. The nanny then spends half an hour reading to Emma, after which the child takes an hour nap and then has free play time until her parents come home. She has dinner with them and spends time with either her mother or father. The parents alternate reading a bedtime story to her. Emma goes to sleep at 8:00 PM. In contrast, Elijah lives with a single father who has a late-shift factory job that starts at 1:00 PM. Elijah gets up at around 8:00 AM. His father makes him breakfast, and they usually spend time together in the morning. The father then drives Elijah to the day care around noon. The boy stays there for five and half hours. During this time, he has lunch and takes part in the afternoon activities and nap time. His grandmother picks him up at 5:30 PM and drives him home.
