• Definition of mixed methods research in the student’s own words. They might include some or all of the following points:
o Pragmatic orientation to research in which the practitioner-scholar draws upon the strengths of qualitative and quantitative research methods to wholly describe and study the research topic, phenomenon, or experience
o Also called multi-methods, multiple methods, and mixing methods
o Is not simply that mixed methods research is blended or mixed
o The researcher makes an informed choice to use both types of data because that is how they will fully understand their research topic of interest
o Questions presented by practitioner-scholars often “bridge” both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and thus require that they adopt a mixed methods approach
o Neither qualitative or quantitative research is inherently better
• Assumptions:
o Assume that qualitative and quantitative approaches are compatible
o Fundamentally based in pragmatic perspectives
o Often described as being driven by research questions
o Requires the practitioner-scholar to have an integrated understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods
