This is a first-rate persuasive argument, probably making strong profits for the authors. The fact there may be an edge of fraud in it does not weaken its power as an argument.
What will be an ideal response?
1) Clearly one major audience is students. Another audience are less
enlightened people who would think they could really make a lot
of money stuffing envelopes. The ad appeared at a university.
Students tend to have time limitations and need money.
2) The argument is clear from the beginning. Easy money is the
argument. You may wonder about the evidence supporting the
argument.
3) In many ways this is a persuasive argument. It has plain words,
talky style, appealing use of fonts, white space, and subheadings.
4) The ad seems to be too good to be true. It offers a kind of “free
lunch.” For many people, the $12 cost might be a turnoff.
5) Ask students to look at help wanted ads in their newspapers and
elsewhere and make a comparison.
6) This should produce an interesting discussion. Students will know
no one making $300-$500 stuffing envelopes.
7) It can be argued the ad is offering “pie in the sky.”
