1. Desisting
• Desistive teacher behaviors are corrective and direct. Teachers inform students that they are engaged in inappropriate behavior and specify the appropriate behavior.
2. Alerting
• Alerting behaviors are usually targeted toward groups of students and focus on keeping the group alert and in anticipation. There are no direct messages given.
3. Enlisting
• Enlisting involves attempts at soliciting the voluntary involvement of an individual or a group to participate in the activity.
4. Acknowledging
• Acknowledging requires sensitivity on the teacher’s part to be familiar with events outside the current activity that may affect the students’ inattentive behavior and to acknowledge those events.
5. Winning
• Winning is similar to enlisting except that the teacher behavior forces student attention on the teacher rather than the activity. Given that students have different needs and respond differently, skillful teachers select their interventions based on the individual student and circumstances.
