Early formal legal codes were lost during the Dark Ages after the fall of Rome and were replaced with common law and the principle of stare decisis. The present English system of law came into existence during reign of Henry II. Under this system a royal judge would decide what to do in each case, using local custom and rules of conduct as guide, known as stare decisis. The judges then began to publish their decisions in local cases, use these written decisions as a basis for decision making, and eventually produced a fixed body of legal rules and principles.
