Discuss the various same-sex relationships across cultures as structured by differences in age, gender, and roles.

What will be an ideal response?

As there is a lack of globally shared sexual orientation categories across cultures, some researchers focus on three areas of sexual behavior expression to link people: age difference, gender difference, and role difference.
Cultures Defined by Age Difference: In some cultures, age is the primary difference for structuring the expression of same-sex relationships.
Cultures Defined by Gender Difference: Cultures defined by gender roles tend to be a bit more tolerant of same-sex relationships. The males who had same-sex attractions were socialized into women's roles, and lived as women. Likewise, certain women were socialized into men's roles, and lived as men.
Cultures Defined by Role Difference: Until at least the 1960s, this kind of role defined difference sometimes accompanied by cross-dressing in male-male and female-female relationships remained common, and was referred to in what LGBTQ people called "butch" (male) and "fem" (feminine) roles in homosexual circles.
