Substantive conflict deals with issues that potentially are harmful to relationships.
For example, a substantive conflict might occur between two people who are romantically
involved but come from different religious backgrounds. These different philosophies about
life, death, family, etc. are serious potential threats to the stability of the relationship.
Nonsubstantive conflict comes in two types, bickering and competition. Bickering involves
picking at one another and competition involves playful challenges. For example, a couple
might bicker about whether or not it is cold outside.
