1. The total of all influences and activities that contribute to the development of a nondeviant personality. This includes measures designed to improve the social environment, such as improved housing and job opportunities.
2. Attempts to deal with specific conditions in a person's environment that are believed to lead to crime and delinquency. Based on Sutherland's theory of differential association, this may include efforts to reduce children's exposure to the antisocial and/or illegal activities of people around them, or to improve their family life.
3. Specific services or programs designed to prevent further crime and delinquency: Most crime prevention programs attempt to work within this definition-such as parole, probation, and training schools.
