Students could invent their own scenarios here, but most likely, they will mention what the text does:
• Prehistoric Ages: Out-of-control fi res caused periodic but temporary changes in the landscape.
• Bronze Age: Smelting technologies required massive amounts of wood fuel, resulting in the destruction of up to four acres of forest per year in the Fertile Crescent, and smoke-fi lled air likely became a health or environmental problem.
• Iron Age: Since ductile iron was not discovered until the mid-twentieth century, Iron Age workers had to grind iron objects that had been cast. The inevitable breakages would have resulted in a considerable waste of materials, which would have tended to accumulate and likely have created one of the fi rst solid-waste disposal problems.
• Middle Ages: Emerging technologies increasingly fouled the air and water, and untreated human and animal wastes from increased populations contaminated water sources resulting in epidemics.
• Colonial Expansion Period: Manufacturers and merchants appeared to value gaining new resources and ignored the negative impacts on their colonies, such as slavery and environmental degradation.
