Digital processors, or microprocessors, have truly revolutionized modern society. Microprocessors are the brains of literally hundreds of billions of devices that humans use. Desktop and laptop computers, cell phones, personal data devices (PDAs), portable email systems, automobiles, airplanes, dishwashers, refrigerators, and cooling and heating systems all have microprocessor-controlled systems. A good example of the widespread use of microprocessors is the modern automobile. A single automobile typically contains over 50 microprocessors!
