Changes in amino acid sequence due to mutation, that don’t disrupt the functioning of a protein
accumulate gradually over time. The further back in time that the ancestors of two species split from
one another, the greater the accumulation of these changes in their separate lineages. Species that share
a more common ancestor have more similar amino acid sequences because fewer changes have
occurred.
