During this period of time, infants rely on their senses and reflexes as they explore their environment. Over time, actions and interactions with the environment become deliberate and children eventually develop schemes or ways of viewing and processing the world. Between the ages of 2 and 7 years, children are in the preoperational stage. During this stage, children's interactions with the environment begin to yield concrete strategies for comprehending and further interacting with the world. During the concrete operational stage, which occurs between 7 and 11 years, children apply knowledge of the environment in a logical manner and can solve problems based on internal thought processes referred to as abstract thinking.
