(1) Understanding addiction: have the knowledge and application of theoretical models applicable to family addiction treatment, be open to theoretical orientations different from own viewpoint, understand complexity of addiction and how it afflicts family, recognize that cultural, economic, social, and political contexts in which substance abuse exists.
(2) Treatment knowledge: have the knowledge of resiliency and risk factors, understand the impact of psychoactive substances on emotional and physiological responses, be able to tailor and implement comorbidity treatment, conduct assessment to inform treatment (clinical evaluation, full medical exam) and work with multidisciplinary team.
(3) Application to practice: understand current diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder, match appropriate treatment to severity of disorder, match treatment to current stage of change, continuously evaluate stage of change for family system.
(4) Professional readiness: customize treatment based on cultural background of client, awareness of evidence-based practice, and requirements and limitations of utilization of health insurance.
