Explain the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion

What will be an ideal response?

Mechanical digestion refers to the physical breaking down food by chewing (mastication), grinding, squeezing, and moving it through the GI tract by peristalsis and segmentation. Chemical digestion is the breaking down food through enzymatic reactions. Mastication is the only component of mechanical or chemical digestion which is under an individual's control. Both mechanical and chemical digestion work to break food into smaller units to facilitate absorption into the blood stream.
