Describe the advantages and disadvantages associated with early and late puberty for both girls and boys.

What will be an ideal response?

- Early maturation is usually advantageous for boys and disadvantageous for girls. Boys enjoy athletic success, popularity, and an enhanced self-concept, whereas early maturing girls may feel uncomfortable and different from their peers (due to obvious bodily changes, such as the appearance of breasts), and may experience ridicule from others.
- Conversely, early maturing boys may become involved in delinquency and substance abuse, as older boys assume the younger are psychologically as well as physically mature. Early maturing girls enjoy some benefits, such as being seen as attractive dating partners or experiencing greater popularity.
- Late maturation holds the same pros and cons for girls and boys. Late maturing boys are typically puny, shorter, and squeakier than their agemates, which can affect self-esteem and self-concept. However, later maturation may eventually confer positive traits to boys, such as assertiveness or insightfulness.
- Late maturing girls may be overlooked for dating during middle school, but by the high school years their bodies are likely to have grown into an attractive social ideal; with that change comes greater body satisfaction and fewer emotional problems.
