Describe the goal of mastery learning and direct instruction, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
What will be an ideal response?
The answers should recognize teacher-centered elements of each method and that mastery learning encourages all students to achieve mastery by adjusting time and feedback for students to progress through the units, and reteaching is provided for those who do not meet mastery. The answers should also recognize mastery learning as applicable to all grades, cognitive domains, and a variety of content areas, but also as widening the gap between higher and lower achieving students. Direct instruction maximizes academic learning time by being highly controlled by the teacher, with structured lessons, cognitive domains, and feedback. Direct instruction is suitable for teaching basic skills, for use with lower-achieving students or students with disabilities, but not beneficial for high-achieving or task-oriented/intrinsically motivated students; also not suitable as the sole teaching method, especially for lower achievers.
