Describing the ‘typical' criminal is an impossible task. Most people, regardless of their criminal record, conform to most norms. They tend to stop at traffic signals, get married, love their families, believe in private property, and respect human life. It is rare indeed to find an offender with no redeeming human qualities. The evil criminals portrayed on television and movie screens are
intended to entertain, not to describe reality. Further, most people with no arrest record do violate laws at one time or another in their lives. Thus, human beings do not fit into distinct criminal versus noncriminal categories. Differences, where they exist, are of degree.
a. It is difficult to describe a typical criminal because human beings do not fit into distinct categories.
b. Criminals are usually no different from noncriminals.
c. Television and movie portrayals of criminals have led to a greater understanding of criminals which has made them easier to recognize.
d. It is difficult, if not impossible, to find a criminal with no good qualities.
