Explain why listening comprehension is critical for early literacy and learning to read.
Listening comprehension is critical because it lays the foundations for reading comprehension. It predicts future reading achievement. Children need lots of opportunities to use listening as a tool for comprehension so that they build up vocabulary, language conventions and academic language. Activities such as recounting events, storytelling, retellings and substantive conversations help children develop listening comprehension skills.
