What are the three main categories of goal orientation? Describe each and give an example.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
1. Mastery goal orientation focuses on the inherent value of learning and improving one's knowledge and skill. An example is a biology student who wants to do a project for a science convention that is outside of the requirements of the biology class.
2. Performance goal orientation involves demonstrating one's ability by getting a good grade or outperforming others. An example is a student who works hard studying math problems with the goal of increasing her grade from average to above average on the next test.
3. Work-avoidance goal orientation involves delaying completion of a task or engaging in activities that distract from completing the task. An example is a student who needs to study for a test tomorrow, but instead spends hours surfing the web and texting friends.
