Describe the process of lactose digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract

What will be an ideal response?

Lactose--a disaccharide consisting of glucose and galactose with a beta bond–is broken down by the enzyme lactase. If the enzyme lactase is not present, undigested lactose can draw water into the GI tract, causing diarrhea. Once the lactose reaches the colon, the bacteria in the colon ferment the sugar and produce various gases which lead to abdominal discomfort.
