Explain why cohesion may not always be a good thing.
What will be an ideal response?
Cohesion is defined as “the resultant of all the forces acting on the members to
remain part of the group.” These forces depend on the attractiveness or
unattractiveness of the prestige of the group, the group members, and/or the group’s
activities. High team cohesion can lead to groupthink. Groupthink is defined as the
conformity-seeking tendency of the group, which results in compromised decision
making. Due to group pressure, the team does not survey all alternatives; expressions
of views that go against the majority of the team members are suppressed. Team
members apply direct pressure on dissenters and urge them to go along with the
majority.
