Explain how marijuana challenges our understanding of addiction.

What will be an ideal response?

Marijuana produces mild withdrawal effects, and early ideas of addiction defined it in terms of physical withdrawal symptoms. It had been assumed that people continued taking marijuana due to psychological dependence, the feeling of desiring a drug. However, the reason for mild withdrawal symptoms of marijuana is because THC is fat soluble, so it leaves the body slowly, allowing the body to adjust to reduced levels of the drug. Today, most scientists view marijuana as addictive because other animals will self-administer marijuana.
