Teachers can apply various styles for setting classroom expectations and consequences, determining how they will share power with students, how open they will be to listening to students’ opinions and desires, and what type of relationship students should expect (e.g., teachers as friends with students or guides for students).
Authoritarian teachers may respond to children in very demanding ways in the classroom. They set the rules and expectations in the classroom and expect immediate/complete compliance from students. They tend to use force/power to secure compliance.
Authoritative teachers may work with students to develop classroom rules/expectations and may negotiate with students if rules/consequences need to be adjusted to fit students’ needs. They are more apt to discuss the intentions behind rules and consequences with students. They are also more willing to listen to students and to discuss student concerns and consider their viewpoints. They may take a more democratic approach to decision making and show more willingness to share power with students in areas that are developmentally appropriate for students to manage.
Permissive/indulgent teachers may set rules/consequences but fail to hold students to them or apply the rules/consequences in a consistent manner. They may be very warm and caring, seeking out friendships with students rather than taking a leadership role. Consequently, they may fear conflict and give in to student demands to avoid contention.
