Explain why chronic drinkers who have developed a
tolerance for alcohol may also be at risk for over-medicating
themselves with other drugs.
The liver enzymes that allow chronic drinkers to metabolize
alcohol effectively, and therefore develop tolerance, are also
used to metabolize other drugs. Thus, if alcohol is consumed
at a high rate then its demand for these enzymes will result in
slower metabolism of the other drugs. This situation can lead
to the accumulation of dangerously high concentrations of
the other drugs in the body.
