How are virtual teams different from teams that meet face-to-face? What are the strengths of

the communication technologies groups can use, and what are the potential problems? What
advice does the text provide for success in virtual teams?

What will be an ideal response?

Virtual teams have the characteristics of small groups except for face-to-face
interaction. Benefits of using technology include message speed, ability to work with
geographically dispersed people, anonymous brainstorming, and less group conflict.
Technology, however, can increase the potential for miscommunication by reducing nonverbal
communication. Further, email can increase conflict, some members may dislike technology, and
members can experience technical problems. Unless they have previously worked together,
virtual groups should meet at least once, usually at the beginning of a project, and ideally, they
should meet again at key points.
