Answers may include:
a. An aging family consists of primary members who are middle aged (at least 40 years old) and older (Silverstein & Giarrusso, 2010) and who are experiencing later-life events and transitions such as retirement, widowhood, later-life divorce and/or marriage, grandparenthood, caregiving, and end-of-life issues. The study of aging families pertains to entire family systems, with emphasis on relationships, transitions, and social support networks of older family members.
b. Aging families can vary in ways such as family size and structure, emotional connection, geographic distance, and family roles. Aging families include opposite-sex and same-sex couples in cohabiting, common-law, or long-term marriages, with or without children, and those who are newly married, divorced, or widowed.
c. Two factors set aging families apart from younger families. The first factor relates to the extended family history that members share. How members of aging families communicate with one another and how they respond to anticipated changes (e.g., retirement) or family crises, for example, are influenced by interactional patterns and coping strategies established in earlier years. A long family history can be a source of strength for family members or, alternatively, a painful barrier difficult to overcome.
d. Another factor that sets aging families apart from families earlier in their development is the likelihood that they will experience coinciding joyful and painful events. At no other life stage is the family system more likely to encounter growth and loss in such close proximity.
