Authoritarian theory of the press states that the duty of the press is to serve the needs of the people who happen to be in power in the government. Soviet/communist theory of the press states that the press should be an instrument of the government to work toward the creation of a perfect state for the workers. Libertarian theory of the press states that the press should be allowed to print or broadcast anything, people have a right to hear all ideas and decide for themselves what is correct. The social responsibility theory of the press states that the press should be as free as possible but that it also has an obligation to serve the needs of the public at large.
