Discuss the differences between stage models of relationship development and relational trajectory models

Describe a specific relationship you have experienced or witnessed and explain which of these two types of models you feel best fits this relationship.

What will be an ideal response?

Stage models tend to be linear in nature, where relationships are thought to move from one step to the next with some stages leading toward commitment and other stages leading to relationship dissolution. As relationships become more intimate, relational partners move from one level of intimacy to the next.

However, relational trajectory models do not view relationships as progressing in a linear fashion, but instead see relationship development as more variable. In relational trajectory models, different events inspire increased or decreased commitment. For example, the turning point model is a type of relational trajectory model that conceptualizes relationship development in which couples move both toward and away from commitments over the course of their relationship. Turning points leading toward increased commitment include get-to-know time, quality time, reunion, passion, positive psychic change, exclusivity, making up, serious commitment, and sacrifice. Turning points leading toward decreased commitment include external competition, disengagement, and negative psychic change.

Answers will vary, but students should describe a relationship they have experienced or witnessed and provide key points that support why they feel one theory is more explanatory than another.
