What is item bias? How do test developers and researchers identify item bias?

What will be an ideal response?

• Item bias occurs when a test item is easier for one group than for another group (e.g., men versus women).

• There are number of methods of identifying biased items such as comparing scores or passing rates of various groups to comparing group performance in terms of an external criterion.

• The preferred method of researchers involves the computation of item characteristics by group (e.g., men and women) and using the item characteristic curve to make decisions about item bias. By plotting the curves on a graph, differences in difficulty and discrimination can be detected readily.
