When you are reading or studying, and you are distracted by thinking about something related to what you are learning, then this distraction is a positive influence on your learning. It helps you apply what you are learning to what you already know, and it is a good use of your learning time. However, if you become distracted about something unrelated to what you are learning, like an upcoming party or a phone call you need to make, then this distraction is a negative influence on your learning and wastes your time. It isn't helping you learn.
