Discuss the 18th Amendment prohibiting alcohol sales in the U.S. Approximately when was national prohibition in effect? Describe some of the beliefs that led to the passage of prohibition, some of its effects, and some reasons leading to its repeal

What will be an ideal response?

Prohibition was in effect 1920-1933 . Desire to eliminate alcohol dependence, crime, reaction against ethnic groups (Irish, Italian) associated with drinking; increased political power of women's groups acting as protectors of the family. Prohibition did decrease drinking and drinking-related health problems, but there was a large black market that fueled the growth of organized crime. Concerns about widespread disrespect for the law combined with a desire to lower the income tax by collecting alcohol taxes, leading to repeal.
