The operant conditioning method is a key part of the Kumon programme as the children are actively engaged in their own learning. The Kumon programme is not a tutored programme. An instructor is on hand to guide the learning, but ultimately it is the child who learns through a repetition of the worksheets that have been cleverly designed for self-study. The reward comes in the shape of gold, silver or bronze medal ceremonies, twice a year, and denote whether the child is 3, 2, or 1 year(s) (respectively) ahead of the national curriculum.
