In a brief essay, explain what net neutrality is and why consumers might be helped by it. What is a reason why online companies might prefer that net neutrality not exist.

What will be an ideal response?

Net neutrality is defined by law professor Tim Wu as an “Internet that does not favor one application (say, the World Wide Web), over others (say, e-mail)?” The advantage to consumers is that it means that Internet providers cannot tell them how they are allowed to use their Internet connection. It would also prohibit Internet service providers from blocking access to certain websites or services. Online providers might like not having net neutrality because they could then make money by giving one media provider faster service than another. Perhaps online provider Comcast would want to make video rom its own NBCUniversal streaming service flow at a faster speed than video from Netflix.
