Solution:
As the grain boundary precipitates grow, they absorb solute atoms from their vicinity by diffusion. As a result, the solute concentration in the region near the grain boundary is lowered below the solubility limit (see Fig. 20.11) and no precipitates can form. A heat treatment schedule would consist of heating the alloy to the single phase region (solution treatment), followed by rapid quenching to prevent the grain boundary precipitate?formation.
