Public speaking apprehension is the level of fear we experience when anticipating or actually speaking to an audience. Researchers have identified three phases we proceed through: anticipation, confrontation, and adaptation.
The anticipation phase is the anxiety we experience before giving a speech, both while preparing it and waiting to speak. The confrontation phase is the surge of anxiety we feel as we begin delivering the speech. The adaptation phase is the period during which our anxiety level gradually decreases. It typically begins about one minute into the presentation and tends to level off after about five minutes.
