What role does the physician play in child abuse cases?
What will be an ideal response?
In injuries or deaths of young children, investigators find radiologists, physicians who specialize in the interpretation of X rays, especially helpful. It is common for those abused to be brought to the hospital emergency room by their parents or relatives who tell hospital personnel that the child was injured in a fall or some other accident. When there is a discrepancy between the characteristics of the injury and the explanation, X rays can be useful in determining whether the injuries were accidental. X rays of the entire body reveal not only the presence of fractures or other injuries to joints and bones but also the existence of older injuries in various stages of healing. Careful questioning of those bringing children to the hospital may be sufficient to confirm the need for a complete investigation.
