Explain the child-centered approach to education and discuss what is different about this philosophy and belief about children than what was held in the past.

What will be an ideal response?

The child-centered approach is based on the ideal of the humanism movement that focused on human needs and values rather than on religious authority. Today we refer to this approach as Developmentally Appropriate Practice3.
In the past, the treatment of children was mainly harsh, and most education was based on rote learning. Physical punishment was the means by which adults controlled children's behavior. At different times and in different places, philosophers and educational innovators recognized shortcomings in the dominant approaches and suggested more humane alternatives. Although they influenced some educators and philosophers, none of these fundamentally changed the day-to-day education and treatment of most young children. However, the idea of educating young children in more humane and meaningful ways has been suggested or rediscovered over and over again by educators and philosophers. Taken together, they have pointed to the child-centered approach that early childhood educators endorse and implement in programs today.
