For students with disabilities, IDEA requires that students receive services in the least restrictive environment
(LRE). What is meant by least restrictive environment? Explain how LRE fits into a therapeutic environment.
What will be an ideal response?
LRE is defined as the least restrictive environment. Federal law requires that students with disabilities receive
instruction in the least restrictive environment. The least restrictive environment is determined based on the individual student and his or her needs in order to provide the fewest restrictions necessary while providing an environment that is safe and appropriate for development. When determining the LRE, one could examine the components of a therapeutic environment, an environment that is safe, humane and responsive to the individual needs of the student.
