Believing that you are in control of a situation can be useful. For example, such a belief may give you more confidence than you would otherwise have. But often such a belief can have bad consequences. Some people, for instance, believe they can through their own power survive an approaching hurricane, when the matter may be beyond their control. They may then die as a result of riding out the hurricane, when they would have evacuated if they had not believed the matter was entirely under their control.
