Suggest any two connections between alcohol consumption, beyond moderation, and the increased risk of breast cancer development?
Moderate alcohol consumption is defined as one drink or less per day for a woman. If a woman drinks an excessive amount of alcohol, she may also eat other foods that contain high levels of fat or sugars. This could lead to weight gain and increased levels of estrogen in her body. Some forms of breast cancer result from the response of breast tissue to estrogen.
A woman who drinks excessively may also not be getting enough nutrients such as vitamins, anti-oxidants, or fibers that may protect her breast tissue from the development of cancer.
Many heavy drinkers are very malnourished and this may lead to a reduction in their immunity. The body's immune system may also detect and destroy cancers in early stages. If immunity is reduced, a small tumor may escape detection and may develop into a cancer.
