Define self-esteem. Discuss the effect that hospitalization and dependence on others can have on self-esteem. Why do you think this happens? What can the nursing assistant do to assist the patient to protect his self-esteem?
What will be an ideal response?
Self-esteem is our opinion of ourselves, and how we wish to appear to others. It is very important to protect the patient's self-esteem. If a person is living independently in the community and suddenly becomes sick or injured, he may become dependent on others to care for him and meet his basic needs. The patient may feel angry, helpless, frustrated, embarrassed, fearful, or withdrawn. The patient may demonstrate his feelings through verbal clues and body language.
The nursing assistant should give the patient emotional support and understanding. Listen if the patient wants to talk. Do not take negative remarks personally. Recognize the patient as an individual with specific likes and dislikes. Use touch if it is appropriate. The patient's privacy should be protected when visitors are present, when he is exposed, and when you are providing care. Allow the patient to do as much as he can for himself, and assist him if he is not able. Assist the patient to fill his empty time. Treat the patient with dignity, respect, and courtesy. Assist the patient to meet his physical, social, and spiritual needs.
