The Japanese language uses two different types of written language: kanji and kana. Kanji are symbols that can represent whole words or entire concepts. Kana, on the other hand, is similar to an alphabet and individual kana can be put together to form whole words or concepts, similar to the American alphabet. Therefore, kanji writing is similar to whole-word reading whereas kana writing is similar to phonetic reading. If Naoki has surface dyslexia, he would be unable to read kanji. In contrast, if he has phonological dyslexia, he would have difficult reading kana.
