Why are E. coli of such concern when they can also be found as part of our normal flora in our colons?

There are many strains of E. coli, which is a common species of intestinal bacteria. Many strains of E. coli are relatively harmless but others may contain a gene for a toxin that can be released from the bacteria. Some of these toxins can cause serious gastrointestinal disease or kidney or cardiovascular complications. Once such deadly strain of E. coli is the O157:H7 strain. There are other new strains as well such as O104:H4
