appreciative listening—happens when you listen for recreation or enjoyment. Examples include listening to music, birds chirping, or an entertaining speech.

empathic listening—occurs when your purpose is to give emotional support to another person. Examples may include a counselor listening to a patient, a caregiver listening to one who is ill, or clergy listening to the concerns of a congregational member.

informative listening—occurs when you want to gain insight or comprehension by concentrating on language, ideas, and details as well as remembering the knowledge. Examples include directions to a friend's new apartment or step-by-step instructions to install Wi-Fi in your car.

critical listening—happens when you listen carefully to a message in order to judge it as acceptable or not. Examples include political debates, a sales pitch, or whether or not to believe a friend's story.
