In a short essay, list and discuss the elements involved in employee monitoring.
What will be an ideal response?
a. Viewing Social Media: A relatively new and easy way to monitor the activities of the
workers is to view social media accounts.
b. E-Mails and Instant Messaging: Firms now have an opportunity to monitor employees by viewing the content on their computers and the content on their firm-issued phones. As long as the equipment belongs to the firm and is loaned to the employee for use, the employer has the right to monitor all information that flows from those sources.
c. Tapping Landline Phones: Even though more and more companies are shifting exclusively to smartphones, most firms still have landline phones. As a result, those phones can be tapped so that the employers can monitor the conversations that take place with that phone.
d. Monitoring Personal Web Postings: Personal blogs are a gold mine of information for
current and potential employers. As with the social media, the individuals are less likely to
filter out their true beliefs on these online formats.
