Define two types of vitamin B12 deficiency. Identify the DRI for vitamin B12 for older adults and list three good food sources
The two types of vitamin B12 deficiency are:
1) Pernicious anemia: macrocytic megaloblastic anemia, due to lack of intrinsic factor being released from the stomach cell wall.
2) Atrophic gastritis: prolonged inflammation, followed by the atrophied stomach mucosa secreting less acid.
The DRI for adults of all ages is 2.4 mcg/day. Good sources include eggs, milk, cheese, milk products, meat, fish, shellfish and poultry.
