A community of learners has the following characteristics: All students actively participate in learning activities, such as teachers calling on all their students; teachers and students work together to help one another learn, such as students helping each other as they work in groups; interaction isn't exclusively teacher-student, such as strong emphasis on student-student interaction; diversity of student interests is respected, such as members of cultural minorities being asked to share information about their cultures; and the thinking is an important outcome in and of itself, such as emphasis on reasons for answers as much as the answers themselves.
