Linda has been invited to participate in a public debate regarding a local policy. She has very strong feelings in support of the policy but needed to conduct more research to prepare for the debate. Linda began by researching arguments in support of the bill but also spent a large time researching arguments in opposition to the policy. Explain why it is important to consider all sides of an argument when formulating public policy.

What will be an ideal response?

The answer should include how considering all sides of an argument allows the advocate to
present the strongest possible case and to establish credibility. For instance, the textbook
supports the idea that researching an argument allows for you to present the strongest argument
because you have tested it against all opposing claims. Further, by considering all options, the
advocate is able to acquire knowledge on an issue and discuss it in an informed and reasoned
manner. The ability to be informed allows for Linda to appear credible to her audience because
she has researched her topic and is able to present it from the strongest possible position.
