Explain the origins of Head Start

In 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a War on Poverty in the United States. As a part of this "war," Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act creating numerous programs designed to fight poverty, one of which was Head Start. Head Start began in 1965 as an eight-week summer program to ensure later school success for preschool-age children considered lacking in advantages.
